Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. The word Lent means 'spring.' This season is a time when many of us observe a period of fasting, repentance, self-denial and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ - His suffering and His sacrifice, His life, death, burial, and resurrection. During the six weeks of self-examination and reflection, we make a commitment to fast, or to give up something--a habit, such as watching TV (I am using this one this year), playing video games, limiting social media use, or a food or drink, such as sweets, chocolate or coffee--something that has meaning to us. Then each time we have a desire for that habit it is a reminder of what Jesus gave up or sacrificed for us. It gives us an opportunity to thank Him for His sacrifice and helps give us a handle on our habit. The goal is to strengthen the faith and spiritual disciplines of each who participate and to develop a closer relationship with God. Lent begins 40 days prior to Easter not counting Sundays. This is because Sundays are always for celebrating Christ's resurrection. This year Lent begins Wednesday March 1st. The significance of the 40-day period of Lent is based on two episodes of spiritual testing in the Bible: the 40 years of wilderness wandering by the Israelite's and the Temptation of Jesus after he spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness. I recommend this for every Christian in our church. I have observed Lent for many years and come away each year stronger and closer to God. It can be hard because habits are not easily controlled. Give it a try and I believe Jesus' sacrifice on the cross will have a deeper meaning for you this Easter.

Did You Know?

Did you know 2nd Harvest food bank distributes food from our parking lot every other Friday morning? That we have adopted Brock Elloit school to try to help them reach some of their goals? We are joining with several other area churches to offer showers to the homeless (our first time is March 13th 1-3pm), Love INC, HOPE Family Shelter, as well as the ministries in our church? All these are great opportunities for service. Some are just a couple of hours every other week. Some are once a month, some are once a quarter but all need volunteers. Pray about being a volunteer. It may just be God's opportunity for you.

Sequoia is a Bible believing Church

We at Sequoia believe there is only One living and true God. He is the God of the universe and has always existed. We worship Him on Sundays at 10 AM as a congregation.  We also worship Him in our lives. As members of a local church body we have committed ourselves to Jesus Christ and covenant together to live as Christians should. We care about the world because He cares about the World. We are committed to people here and around the world. Click on Missions to see what we are doing to advance the Gospel at home and abroad. Click on Students or Children to see how Sequoia is meeting the needs and challenging these young people.
